Cranberries have been a part of American culture since.... well... before it was America!  Native Americans used cranberries for food, dyes, medicine and as a symbol of peace.  The pilgrims quickly learned about the health benefits of this "wonder-berry" and incorporated them into their diets.  American and Canadian sailors used cranberries on long voyages to protect themselves from scurvy.

The cranberry is a truly amazing berry with amazing potentials.  Research in recent years shows many benefits to eating cranberries.

  • Cranberries are high in antioxidants and can be beneficial for the health of your gums.  They contain an anti-inflammatory agent that may help ward off gum disease.  This agent also helps slow down plaque development.
  •  Cranberries are also known for their "anti-adhesion" properties, which help guard against harmful bacteria that cause urinary tract infections and stomach ulcers.
  • Cranberries may help protect against food poisoning.  They may significantly reduce the growth of salmonella, E. coli, and other dangerous bacteria.
  • In some people, regular cranberry juice consumption for months can kill the H. pylori bacteria, which can cause stomach cancer and ulcers.
  • Drinking cranberry juice daily may increase levels of HDL, or good cholesterol and reduce levels of LDL, or bad cholesterol.
  • Cranberries may prevent tumors from growing rapidly or starting in the first place.
  • Extracts of chemicals in cranberries prevent breast cancer cells from multiplying in a test tube; whether that would work in women is unknown.
