Our Members and Mission Oregon Cranberry Growers Association Members are Oregon Cranberry Growers and people involved in the industry. Our objectives are to support educational cranberry research with emphasis on current problems. These problems range from weeds, insects, and diseases to nutrition, irrigation, mechanization, plant physiology and plant genetics. OCGA projects are intended to further the development and general prosperity of cranberry production in Oregon. Please join the Oregon Cranberry Growers Association now. As a grower or someone involved in the industry your support is essential to us. In order to continue funding the types of projects relevant to local conditions we need dedicated members like yourself. OCGA Recent Projects The Commercial Horticulture Extension Agent Position. When Art Poole retired, Board members met with the Coos County Commissioners, attended meetings with Oregon State Extension Personnel and wrote many letters to keep the Extension Agent Position. Three of our Board members also served on the Screening Committee to hire the new Extension Agent. The Farm Science and Review Day. Each year the OCGA sponsors the Farm Science and Review Day. In the summer of 2005 we visited Dick and Wayne Everest’s farm, observed their new irrigation cycle stop valve and listened to presentations from Kim Patten, John Hart and Bernadine Strik. We were able to offer Pesticide Recertification Credits so growers could keep their Pesticide Licenses current. A Section 18 Label for Callisto. The OCGA worked with Kim Patten, WSU Extension, and Jere Downing, Cranberry Institute, to get a Section 18 Label for Callisto with a 45 day PHI instead of the original 90 day PHI. Now we will work towards a permanent Label for Callisto in Oregon. The Cranberry School. In the spring of 2006 the OCGA hosted our first Cranberry School which we plan to make an Annual Event. Speakers included John Hart from Oregon State University, Frank Caruso from the University of Massachusetts, Teryl Roper from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Kim Patten from Washington State University. Annual Meetings. Each year in the spring the OCGA has an Annual Meeting. In 2006 Jere Downing from the Cranberry Institute explained the labeling process for pesticides and Sunny Jones from the Oregon Department of Agriculture gave a presentation on how the new pesticide Use Reporting System will work. Our new Extension Agent, Linda White, also gave an introduction. Research Projects. The OCGA is currently helping support two Research Projects. We are helping fund Frank Caruso’s work to revise the Compendium for Blueberry and Cranberry Diseases and helping fund Nahla Bassil from the USDA Germplasm Repository in Corvallis to DNA fingerprint cranberries. In the future we hope to make available to the growers a service that will genetically identify cranberry vines. That way growers can check their beds and vines they intend to buy to see if they are the correct variety. Please Join the OCGA If you aren’t already a member, please join the Oregon Cranberry Growers Association so we can continue projects like these and more, in the future.
